'Wrexham's Eagles Meadow is now the shopping capital of North Wales'.

That was the message from Welsh Secretary Peter Hain when he visited the £100 million complex yesterday. Mr. Hain was there to see for himsel how it is beating the recession and helping to put the town firmly back on the shopping map. Eagles Meadow, which has been nominated for a gold accolade in the annual awards of the British Council of Shopping Centres, has propelled Wrexham from 191st to 163rd in the UK shopping league table, giving a welcome boost to the town centre's trading performance. The complex has already been hailed by the British Retail Consortium as an example of how to beat the recession and prevent shoppers being lured away to neighbouring town and cities.

Speaking during the visit Mr Hain said: "Eagles Meadow is an examplar shopping complex which has clearly bucked the trend of recession and is continuing to expand and succeed. It's nomination for a prestigious gold award for in-town shopping centres shows that the complex rightly compares with the likes of Liverpool One and London's Westfield Centre. Its success in attracting shoppers from across many regions has made it the capital of shopping in North Wales and this can only be good news for the local economy."
